“Copperhead is the best course we play on Tour.”
- Paul Azinger, 2008 U.S. Ryder Cup Captain and 12-time PGA TOUR winner
Each year, the resort’s Copperhead Course is host to the PGA TOUR’s Transitions Championship, an official 72-hole event. Held in March, the event features 144 PGA TOUR golfers, with proceeds from ticket sales benefiting area charities through the Championship’s Birdies for Tampa Bay Charities program.
The 2009 event was won by Retief Goosen at 8 under par. Goosen joins K.J. Choi as the only two-time winners of this prestigious event. In 2008, the event was won by Sean O’Hair at 4 under par. PGA veteran Mark Calcavecchia was the one-shot winner in 2007, edging Heath Slocum and John Senden with a score of 10 under par.
Previous champions also include Innisbrook member John Huston, Vijay Singh and Carl Pettersson. Previously, Innisbrook was host to 10 JC Penney Classic tournaments that featured mixed teams of PGA TOUR and LPGA Tour professionals.
